Sing me a love song

#1 Post by I65 » Sat Sep 24, 2005 3:25 am

Kind of cool thread I found on IMBD...Post the lyrics of your favorite love song. Here is mine, closest you get to me "lounge" singing...

The Promise ~ Tracy Chapman

If you wait for me
then I'll come for you
Although I've traveled far
I always hold a place for
you in my heart

If you think of me
If you miss me once in awhile
Then I'll return to you
I'll return and fill that space in your heart

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
i'll find my way back to you
if you'll be waiting

If you dream of me
Like I dream of you
in a place that's warm and dark
In a place where I can
feel the beating of your heart

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
i'll find my way back to you
if you'll be waiting

I've longed for you
And I have desired
to see your face your smile
To be with you wherever
you are

Remembering
Your touch
Your kiss
Your warm embrace
i'll find my way back to you
if you'll be waiting

Together again
it would feel so good to be
In your arms
Where all my journeys end
If you can make a promis
If it's one that you can keep
I vow to come for you
If you wait for me

And say you'll hold
A place for me
In your heart.

From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea - The Cure

Every time we do this
I fall for her
wave after wave after wave
it's all for her
I know this can't be wrong I say
(and I'll lie to keep her happy)
as long as I know that you know
that today I belong
right here with you
right here with you...

and so we watch the sun come up
from the edge of the deep green sea
and she listens like her head's on fire
like she wants to believe in me
so I try
put your hands in the sky
surrender
remember
we'll be here forever
and we'll never say goodbye...

I've never been so
colourfully-see-through-head before
I've never been so
wonderfully-me-you-want-some-more
and all I want is to keep it like this
you and me alone
a secret kiss
and don't go home
don't go away
don't let this end
please stay
not just for today

never never never never never let me go she says
hold me like this for a hundred thousand million days
but suddenly she slows
and looks down at my breaking face
why do you cry? what did I say?
but it's just rain I smile
brushing my tears away...

I wish I could just stop
I know another moment will break my heart
too many tears
too many times
too many years I've cried for you

how much more can we use it up?
drink it dry?
take this drug?
looking for something forever gone
but something
we will always want?

why why why are you letting me go? she says
I feel you pulling back
I feel you changing shape...
and just as I'm breaking free
she hangs herself in front of me
slips her dress like a flag to the floor
and hands in the sky
surrenders it all...

I wish I could just stop
I know another moment will break my heart
too many tears
too many times
too many years I've cried for you
it's always the same
wake up in the rain
head in pain
hung in shame
a different name
same old game
love in vain
and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
away from home again...

Are multiple posts legal?

The most special love song to me will always be the song we first danced to at our wedding. It was an unusual song for our generation to pick, but the lyrics meant so much to my wife that we decided it was right.

However - to respect her privacy I'm not going to post that one. Anyone we know who might happen to read this and my other posts would instantly recognize who I am and who she is. Unlikely I know, and I don't mean to be secretive - I just wanted to go on record as saying that any song I post means less to me than our wedding song.
"Willoughby. Next stop is Willoughby."

OK - I know this isn't storytellers, but a bit of background.

I went to an urban highschool in the 60s where I met my wife. I always thought the Temptations sang very poetic love songs - as evidenced by this very popular "slow dance" song back then:

My Girl

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I've got so much honey the bees envy me.
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

I don't need no money, fortune, or fame.
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim.
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl).

And I also loved this song of unrequited love (I really love the "Chicka Boom"s) and I loved playing bass to this song in my band):

I Can't Get Next to You

I can turn your gray sky blue
I could make it rain whenever I wanted to
I can build a castle from a single grain of sand
I can make a ship sail on dry land
But my life is incomplete and I'm so blue
'Cause I can't get next to you
Next to you, I just can't get next to you

I can fly like a bird in the sky
Hey, and I can buy anything that money can buy
I can turn a river into a raging fire
I could live forever if I so desired
Unimportant are all these things I can do
'Cause I can't get next to you
No matter what I do

(Chicka-boom Chicka-boom;
Chicka-boom-boom-boom)

I can turn back the hands of time
You'd better believe I can
I can make the seasons change
Just by a wave of my hand
I can change anything from old to new
The thing I want to do the most I'm unable to do
Unhappy am I with all the powers I possess
'Cause girl, you're the key to my happiness
And I, wo, I can't get next to you

(fade):
Girl, you're blowin' my mind 'cause I can't get (next to you)
Can't you see these tears I'm cryin'? I can't get (next to you)
Girl, it's you that I need; I gotta get (next to you)
"Willoughby. Next stop is Willoughby."

This one will keep us from becoming too melancholy:

"Down to Seeds and Stems Again Blues"

I'm sittin alone, Saturday night, watching the Late Late Show.
A bottle of wine, some cigarettes, I got no place to go.
Well, I saw your other man today; he was wearing my brand new shoes, And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Well, I met my old friend Bob today from up in Bowling Green;
He had the prettiest little gal that I'd ever seen.
But I couldn't hide my tears at all, cause she looked just like you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Now everybody tells me there's other ways to get high.
They don't seem to understand I'm too far gone to try.
Now these lonely memories, they're all I can't lose,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.

Well my dog died just yesterday and left me all alone.
The finance company dropped by today and repossessed my home.
That's just a drop in the bucket compared to losing you,
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too.
Got the Down to Seeds and Stems again Blues.

And, no...I don't smoke...anything.

My selection would have to be "Language", by Suzanne Vega:

If language were liquid, it would be rushing in
Instead here we are, in a silence more eloquent
than any word could ever be

These words are too solid, they don't move fast enough
To catch the blur in the brain that flies by and is gone
And is gone, and is gone, gone,
Gone, gone,

And is gone

I'd like to meet you in a timeless, placeless place
Somewhere out of context
and beyond all consequences

Let's go back to the building on Little West 12th;
it is not far away and the river is there
And the sun and the spaces are all laying low,
and we'll sit in the silence
that comes rushing in

And is gone, and is gone, gone,
Gone, gone, and is gone

I won't use words again,
they don't mean
what I meant,
they don't say
what I said

It's just the crust of the meaning
with realms underneath,
never touched,
never stirred,
never even moved through

If language were liquid, it would be rushing in
Instead here we are in a silence more eloquent
than any word could ever be

And is gone, gone,
Gone, gone,

And is gone

This song was performed by Frank Sinatra and also Diana Krall:
Maybe You'll Be There

Each time I see a crowd of people
Just like a fool I stop and stare
It's really not the proper thing to do
But maybe you'll be there
I go out walking after midnight
Along the lonely thoroughfare
It's not the time or place
To look for you
But maybe you'll be there
You said your arms would always hold me
You said you lips were mine alone to kiss
Now after all those things you told me
How can it end like this
Someday if all my prayers are answered
I'll hear a footstep on the stair
With anxious heart
I'll hurry to the door
And maybe you'll
Be there

another is by The Cure-Lovesong

Whenever I'm alone with you,
you make me feel
Like I am home again
Whenever I'm alone with you,
you make me feel like I am whole again

Whenever I'm alone with you,
you make me feel
Like I am young again
Whenever I'm alone with you,
you make me feel like I am fun again

However far away,
I will always love you,
However long I stay,
I will always love you,
Whatever words I say,
I will always love you,
I will always love you

Whenever I'm alone with you,
You make me feel like I am free again,
Whenever I'm alone with you,
You make me feel like I am clean again

However far away,
I will always love you,
However long I stay,
I will always love you,
Whatever words I say,
I will always love you,
I will always love you

Gotta love a little Ozzy love song in the morning. This is what I listened to on my way to work today...

I Just Want You

There are no unlockable doors
There are no unwinnable wars
There are no unrightable wrongs or unsingable songs
There are no unbeatable odds
There are no believable gods
There are no unnameable names
Shall I say it again, yeah

There are no impossible dreams
There are no invisible seams
Each night when the day is through
I don't ask much
I just want you

There are no uncriminal crimes
There are no unrhymable rhymes
There are no identical twins or forgivable sins
There are no incurable ills
There are no unkillable thrills
One thing and you know it's true
I don't ask much
I just want you

I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired
I used to go to bed so high and wired, yeah...
I think I'll buy myself some plastic water
I guess I should have married Lennon's daughter, yeah...

There are no unachievable goals
There are no unsaveable souls
No legitimate kings or queens
Do you know what I mean?
There are no indisputable truths
And there ain't no fountain of youth
Each night when the day is through,
I don't ask much
I just want you

Ok, The Ozman isn't much of a philosopher, but it is a sweet song...

I always like the simple harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash and sometimes Young. Interesting in that all their voices are relatively high pitched. This is probably considered their best blend of voices. The lyrics, when read, don’t come close to the poetry and images painted through the music and harmonies. If you’ve never heard this song – it’s worth the 99 cents on iTunes or Napster to get it.

Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit he runs
Wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of goodbye

Wordlessly watching he waits by the window and wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams he worries
Did he hear a good-bye?
Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

Stand by the stairway you'll see something certain to tell you
Confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying it's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

I’ve listened to it several times recently and could never really figure it out completely. I always thought it was a sad song about a man who couldn’t quite figure out where he stood with his woman. But I wonder now if it's about a woman who has her issues and can’t quite say “hello” in the way he needs.

All I know is that they are one together, and two alone.

The three together is children?

And ultimately underneath it all they are for each other.

And speaking of CS&N - on a lighter note

one of my favorite "hippie anthems" of the 60s (just the first verse):

Almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
It's gettin kinda long
I coulda said it wasn't in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
Cause I feel like I owe it to someone

Capured the anti-somethin mood of the times.

Wow. Incredible songs, you guys.

I recently downloaded a video (music, mock) of LIT. And the song on the background was "Peninsula Pomegranate Pendegrass" by Halley.
I loved it, I spent a whole day thinking about it. Still do. It goes well with LIT too. Enjoy:

One of these days I'm gonna fly back to Montana and sneaker soles could be my shoes
'Cause things up there aren't as heavy as they tell you, you get too high sometimes to move
So everyday, can I dream about the big sky, until I've walked and I can't lose
Until we get there, could we sleep al through the daytime, holding on is all I have to do
So take this big time take the air and all you've saved up, and let's go down to the liquor store
Across the street si the first step we can take up, cause I can't be here anymore
Grab your bags and while we're waiting let me hold you, this doesn't feel quite like before
Before we go now, I'm not as brave as I told you, my mind is weak and my heart is sore.
Nothing is more beautiful than something that will not last

Although more of an Anti-love song than a love song, one of my favourite tunes is Radio by Alkaline Trio. A great unplugged, acoustic song by a well known punk band (Ith and 52FM are going to put a hit on me for this). The reason I like this song so much is the clever lyrics. Take a look:

Shaking like a dog sh*ttin' razorblades,
waking up next to nothing after dreaming of you and me
I'm waking up all alone, waking up so relieved
while you're taking your time with apologies,
I'm making my plans for revenge
Red eyes on orange horizons
If Columbus was wrong I'd drive straight off the edge
I'd drive straight off the edge

Taking your own life with boredom,
I'm taking my own life with wine -
it helps you to rule out the sorrow,
it helps me to empty my mind
Making the most of a bad time
I'm smoking the brains from my head
Leaving the coal calling the kettle black and orange and red
This kettle is seeing red

I've got a big fat f*ckin' bone to pick with you my darling
In case you haven't heard I'm sick and tired of trying
I wish you would take my radio to bathe with you,
plugged in and ready to fall
I'd rather be a gear in a big, deterministic, physical machine than just some random swerving.

Ok, I figured after ruining everyone's mushy feelings I might as well come back and post my own favourite love song.
The one I would have to say hit me the hardest is called A Plain Morning by Dashboard Confessional (sorry 52FM  ). If there are any other fans of DC here I'm happy to report that this is an unplugged, acoustic version done by only Chris Carabba before he sold out and got a drummer and bassist.
The lyrics in brackets are done by a ghostly, sad female voice.

It's yet to be determined,
but the air is thick,
and my hope is feeling worn.
I'm missing home,
and I'm glad you're not a part of this,
there's parts of me that will be missed.
And the phone is always dead to me,
so I can't tell you the temperature is dropping
and it feels like.

It's colder than it ought to be in March
and I still got a day or two ahead of me
till I'll be heading home,
into your arms again.
And the people here are asking after you.
It doesn't make it easier.
It doesn't make it easier to be away.(to be away)

I'd like to hire a plane.(a plane)
I'd see you in the morning, (morning)
when the day is fresh.
I'm coming home again. (I'm coming home again)
Coming home again. (again)
Coming home again. (again)
When the day is fresh,
I'm coming home again.(I'm coming home again)

But it's warmer where you're waiting.
It feels more like July.
There's pillows in their cases,
and one of those is mine.
And you wrote the words "I love you",
and sprayed it with perfume.
It's better than the fire is
to heat this lonely room.
It's warmer where you're waiting
It feels more like July.
It feels more like July.

(easier)
It doesn't make it easier to be away.(to be away)

I'd like to hire a plane.(a plane)
I'd see you in the morning, (morning)
when the day is fresh.
I'm coming home again. (I'm coming home again)

Alkaine Trio is another one of my younger son's favorites; he went to see them a few weeks ago. I must say I don't know one from another - I jsut know I don't like what I hear coming from his room (when he's home from school) or in hius CD player in his car.

But I must say the lyrics to that last song make me wnat to hear the acoustic version. After all - there is actually some poetry of sorts in Hendrix' music (well, not Hey Joe) despite the feedback and guitar effects.

I like a lot of Pink Floyd, but I don't have any on my iPod.

My daughter's boygfriend is a big fan - he even has a DVD of "Dark Side of Oz" - the movie Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon synced up as the sound track. Interesting!

Here's an excellent Pink Floyd love song. It's called "A Pillow of Winds," and it's from the "Meddle" album.

A cloud of eiderdown
Draws around me
Softening the sound.
Sleepy time when I lie
With my love by my side,
And she's breathing low.

And the candle dies.

When night comes down
You lock the door.
The book falls to the floor.
As darkness falls
The waves roll by,
The seasons change
The wind is warm.

Now wakes the owl,
Now sleeps the swan
Behold the dream
The dream is gone.
Green fields, a cold rain
Is falling, in a golden dawn.

And deep beneath the ground,
The early morning sounds
And I go down.
Sleepy time when I lie,
With my love by my side,
And she's breathing low.

And I rise, like a bird,
In the haze, when the first rays
Touch the sky.

And the night winds die.
