I like the way my method plays out, it's a little more dramatic. Which should impress Silver's gal, who obviously likes the drama.

Just imagine it:
<*POW*>
"Ouch, my nose!"
"Stay away from my girlfriend, you prick!"

This method works even better in the girlfriend's hallway, where all the other ladies can watch this event ringside. You get the satisfaction of embarassing/injuring him in front of members of the opposite sex, which is humiliating to most men. Plus, Silver might actually receive a few promising leads, if he loses this particular girl.

Never underestimate the power of a well-timed, well-placed event.

Oh, and Silvermoon, your 14 days are up today.

gotta admit i like the sound of both, but not necessary. forgot to mention the guy is moving away in a couple of weeks time, so not only will he not see her after (not much anyway, but probably will at some point) but it does to an extent give him license to see her now, seeing as they are close friends and will not be around for each other soon. that is the only reason i put up with it, and i spoke to charlotte last night and she told me he got angry for a reason, a limited one at that, but it wasn't unmotivated. but of course, i wouldnt put up with it if it were for no apparent reason. also, considering how close they were before i came along, such actions might scare her off, they'd certainly warp her perceptions of me. the thing that actually worries me is the fact he keeps turning up uninvited in an apparently guarded building. thats creepy. oh, and i never see the guy either, cos he's always hiding until i leave, and i have no way of getting to him. come to think of it, i have no idea how he even knows i'm there in the first place...have to watch my back

she's loosened up recently, at least a bit, but before she was very guarded about other people making decisions for her. all things considered, she thought we had not known each other for long enough to even be in a relationship, let alone trust me on decisions that affect her relationships with friends. it's starting to an extent to stabilise (havnt i said that before...?) but i still dont feel like she would listen to me completely on every issue, especially regarding those she feels close to, or responsible for (which she does, for complicated reasons, with her 'friend')

and we've forgotten the 14 day thing. all things considered, the events of the past 2 weeks have over-shadowed that completely. the first landmark to come is our 100th day together. she considers our first day to be that of our first kiss, on Oct 3rd. that would make our 100th day together Jan 10th, i believe. just over 4 weeks to plan it. pls feel free to shower me with ideas (in fact, i pratically insist :? ). so far i'm thinking something to do with lilies (her favourite flower), a journal as Ith suggested way back when, and possibly the supposed tradition among her friends of postcards from friends and wellwishers. but i want to try and be original and wildly romantic, preferably not recycling cliches. so, any help would be most welcome!

Oh, Geez.
Get ready for a LOT more of those! :)

Maybe you should take her out to some kind of semi-formal event (dinner and a movie?) and make preparations for some kind of pleasant surprise upon your return.

Also, you might want to start thinking about what you're going to surprise her with when she brings up the 150 days, 6 months, 300 days, 1 year since we first met, 1 year since we first kissed, etc. I think you're in for quite the ride.

No, Congruous.

Irony would be Silvermoon breaking up with her then.
Just before the dinner.

thanks for the vote of confidence. last night was another big night . i hadn't seen her for 40 hrs over the weekend, but she never left my mind. so i was very excited to meet her, but when i did, something about her mood gave me nothing to smile about. it was painfully obvious there was something on her mind, but i didnt want to push her so let the day unwind. cut to the evening.

her mood was getting worse and worse, which i initially attributed to the fact she had slept less than 10 hrs in the past 2 days. but she became more and more antagonistic, and eventually she decided to tell me a secret she had been holding back from me for weeks. she first told me that she felt compelled to say it because over the weekend she had realised she had fallen deeply in love with someone, to the extent she had changed, no longer able to repress thoughts and feelings, no longer able to sleep without his presence. and then she told me i had once declared this to be the worst thing i could hear, and that she was sure i would ask to end the relationship after i knew. there was always one thing i maintained was beyond my capacity for forgiveness: an affair. i swallowed hard, and she began to tell me.

it regarded her friend, the jealous one, she said. and i thought it all began to make sense. but she continued, and i sat in stony silence. she said she had been romantically involved with him for a single night (not in the major sense), just days before we met. that ended for a while when he pushed her away by trying to make her choose between me and him, way back in our first weeks. but her friends had contrived a way for them to meet again, and they talked, and decided to remain friends. all throughout the time we had been together, they had met many times, and he had declared himself to be jealous of me, not because he missed her, as she had said, but because he wanted her. but they had never acted further on that single night because she had met someone who she felt was special, that she had a feeling about him. so they remained friends, but their relationship deteriorated, and while they still saw each other, he became more and more disrespectful of her, and she no longer saw him as a true friend, but simply someone she felt responsible for (for complicated reasons).

she paused, and i sat in silence. i swallowed hard again, and sat waiting. and waiting. she did not speak, but stared at the floor, fidgeting. and then i realised that that was the whole story. i asked her what it was that had bothered her so much about it, why she had waited so long to tell me. she said that she defined it as an affair, despite no physical romantic gestures since we had been together. i sat and pondered this for a short while, then laughed. she looked bemused, but the relief was too great. i could not deny that it was a bit of an anti-climax. i told her that her past, even her recent past, was not something that she could change, that she did not know she was to meet me in the future, that it did not matter. i had always been uncomfortable with her meeting her friend, but i always suspected this was the situation with them. she had told me in our first weeks, even though she had forgotten this. at the same time, i learnt to trust her, that i knew that i treated her in a way i didnt feel she was ready to throw away for someone so disrespectful. i trusted in her and in myself. at first she was slightly offended that i did not react badly, that all her time stressing about it had been wasted. but she soon loosened up and smiled for the first time of the day.

she told me that she was still not ready to give anyone her heart, but was happy to know that i was willing to do so (because of my naivety). she told me to wait, that it would happen if i turned out to be the person i promised. and i told her that i would be the person she would learn to trust above all others. she laughed at my arrogance...but didnt deny it.

finally, she brought up the topic of sex. but i refused, and told her to sleep. 10hrs and she couldn't keep her eyes open. not ideal

I'm sorry, Silvermoon. I know I should be more supportive. But the truth is, I can't even bring myself to like this girl. While your enthusiasm is simply awe-inspiring, it is also blind, deaf, and dumb. This girl has shown you zero respect. I know she is beautiful, but perhaps you should imagine her personality transported into someone else's body. Does she really seem so precious to you now?

I suppose there is a certain narcissistic value in bagging a great-looking gal at Uni, but I don't see any real connection here. What I see is you, bending over backwards and inside out, trying to make her love you. Are you getting anything of value from this relationship? Ask yourself that question, and answer honestly.

The nice thing about school is that you have the opportunity to meet many different women with a great variety of talents and unique quirks. Some of those quirks might play well off of your own. If you continue to follow illusory paths such as this with blinders on, you will never meet them.

And that's a shame.

nonono, don't take that the wrong way, i didn't mean that i valued anyone's opinion over yours. but i think i have begun to use these posts as an outlet for my frustrations more than anything else, and neglected to include all the wonderful feelings and details i did at the beginning, and you picked up on my anxieties. i'm not so masochistic and narcissistic that i will take pain for someone who caused me so much, simply for her beauty. and i always emphasised her personality, her lovely quirks, the things she does, the little moments, before her looks. in fact, right now, i am feeling a little under the weather, and she has taken it upon herself to look after me. she stepped out to buy ingredients for cooking me dinner, and immediately called me, from just down the road, to check up on me, to tell me to call her if i needed anything. in reality, for all the problems, they cannot mask her pure heart and kind nature. but my words can. she is the sweetest girl, and i am sorry to her for misrepresenting her.

the truth is, for all the anxiety i have detailed in my recent posts, they only came about because i have really begun to see myself sharing something great with her, and i am becoming more anxious of what i have to lose, and am fixating on that. and also, personality and experiences are two different things. her personality is what attracted me, her experiences are what worry me. but they aren't who she is. she has always tried to combat those things for me, and they are huge obstacles to overcome.

the biggest issue is that of trust. she said that she finds it hard to trust anyone, not just me, to give them her heart, because she has experienced first hand what it feels like to have it broken. but she was unfortunate enough to have that happen to her. it is only natural she will erect barriers around herself, to protect herself, to prevent herself from getting too close to someone, when there is so much to lose. and despite those efforts, she cannot help but let slip every now and then her enthusiasm and hopes: two years from now, there is something she must do that requires significant emotional support. despite her talk of emotional distance, she has already earmarked me as the one to be there for her, to help her. because she trusts me.

that is of greatest value, to have someone's trust, and noone before has ever given me so much. that is why she is so special to me. no mention of looks anywhere. but i'd like to thank you for your support and advice, because i know it comes from a good place, with good intentions.

the moment that sticks in my mind always, is when we were apart for two days. she read my letter, and called me. and the words she said, '(i called you) because i love you so so much', the tears she wept...i'll never doubt them for a second

I agree with Hull Street. Life is much too short to dally with a woman like this. Silvermoon, based on the way you have described her she is a zero. She has manipulated you every which way and back again. She jerks you around to extort "love" from you. You are a perfectly good person as you are. If that isn't good enough for her- which seems to be the case here- then move on. Love doesn't need to hurt. I can't emphasize this enough. Haven't you made it clear that your parents have an awful relationship? That doesn't need to happen! I promise you that there are attractive, fun (yes, women can be FUN!) women in close proximity to you right this minute.

oh dear...i think my words have spiralled out of control. i must admit that i had lost sight of things i enjoyed and focused entirely on things that made me anxious. to be fair, there have been many, but then noone said relationships are easy. and especially with someone with so much to love. all the problems mentioned have occurred because of situations beyond her control, and actions from others that she was not complicit to. they've significantly warped her perception of other people. she can't be blamed for having so many bad experiences, for believing all people to be the same when nobody has proved that wrong. i'm surrounded by great individuals, for sure, and i've always recognised my own luck in this respect. but she stands tallest among them all. i can't just ignore her efforts to accept me when she is trying so hard. however negatively skewed, if you looked closely at her, her body language, her tone of voice, she is very conflicted between trying to keep me at a distance and accepting that i am different to those she's known. she talks of not wanting to waste time with anyone anymore, because she put so much emotionally into someone before and saw it all come to waste. is it really so strange for someone to want to avoid being hurt a second time? i understand that she will try and test me, push me a little. because of that someone who hurt her, anyone would have to prove to her that they are worth her effort and love. if i was ever hurt like that i know i wouldn't be foolish enough to rush headlong into something like it again, without taking precautions. noone wants to be hurt, never mind a second time. if she is pushing me in this way, i know it is because she has a feeling about me, but wants to be sure. she vowed she would not have a boyfriend after her heart was broken, but she defied that for me. i don't talk about her trust, her risks, her pain. but every once in a while, when the cracks show and they get to her, i'm the only one there to see it. and i can tell you it's real.

i think many of the things i have said in the past have shown me to be fairly soulful, not superficial. i have certain values that i adhere to strongly, and i am not weak-minded in that respect. i won't be bullied or manipulated. i'm afraid my posts have become increasingly inconsistent and biased. i have portrayed myself as a lesser person than i am. i was always afraid it would turn out like that. i won't defend someone who does not deserve it, and that applies to me as well as her. i think its time for a new beginning. 10 things in the past few days that brighten up my life. the little things that others forget, but for me live long in the memory.

1. calling me 3 mins after stepping out to check i'm alright
2. eating my cooking and enjoying it (or pretending to)
3. her head on my shoulder as we sit in the dark
4. sharing chocolate with a kiss
5. speaking like me, anticipating my words, finishing my sentences
6. embracing me out of the blue
7. catching my stare with a glance and a smile
8. giving a massage when i have the slightest look of discomfort
9. her stern facade melting with just a smile, replaced with girlish enthusiasm
10. the way she looks up at me, with her big round eyes, a hint of a smile and a serene look of innocence. that's love

Well, look...I don't want to make you mad at me and I'm sure everyone else here feels the same. I'm certainly not mad at you, but I want you to realize that I/we are simply responding to the words you write, and this young woman doesn't stand up well to scrutiny. There are a few of us who have gathered at this little site and we wish the best for everyone here. I mean, I don't know Johnmonkey from Adam, and I will probably never meet him, but I was happy to hear about his marriage and I hope he and his wife have a happy life together. You have troubled yourself to write extensively (and bravely) about this relationship. What eats at me is that I see (through your words) a young woman who is striving to squeeze you into a shape that suits her needs. A good relationship does not require a situation where one person exerts an inordinate amount of control. Control will run a relationship straight into the ground.

To look at it another way, why would you want to allow her this control anyway? Who is to say that you are not more advanced socially, creatively, and intellectually than she is? I certainly accept that freedom is an ideal that may not be truly attainable, but why constrict yourself at a time of your life when you have so many opportunities? You're obviously a very intelligent, well spoken person and you live in one of the most fantastic countries in the world. Is it wise to tie yourself to an insecure, frightened person who insists that you operate at her speed? What's wrong with operating at YOUR speed? By all means, treat her with the respect every human being deserves, but take off and do what is best for you. If she wants you, let her follow and adapt.

I have at times wanted to jump into this discussion - but have hesitated in part because the others have offered such good advice and also becuase I didn't want Silvermoon to think we were "piling on".

But something Congruous just said struck such a personal chord that I have to.

"Control will run a relationship straight into the ground. "

I have been married for 30 years. My whole "Charlotte" episode is chronicled here in the archives - what I've spent little if any time talking about really is what led to it in the first place. And how I'm struggling now to deal with those matters that I immaturely dealt with long ago.

"Control will run a relationship straight into the ground. " It did. I allowed my wife to control me - almost from the day we got married and for so long that neither one of us can untangle what happended and why. So much so that I became anamored with other woman. So much so that I ended up hurting my wife and felt she deserved it. Hurting her so much that the next many years were spent "doing pennance" and letting her control me even more. So much so that I didn't think I had the strength to let it stop. Miraculously I found that strength a few months ago (not from this site but from a very special friend) - but I really fear it's too late.

We will get counseling after the Christmas season is over. To be honest in front of everyone here - for Silvermoon's benefit - I'm really scared that I don't even want to fix this marriage anymore - after 30 years, what a horrible thing to say.

You see- Congruous is SO right! A person can be controlling you and yet giving you so many wonderful experiences that the controlling can go unnoticed - or forgiven. But it won't stop; it can (and will) become the dynamic that your relationship operates under. You will at some point want it to stop - but being the "controllee" - it is damn near impossible. Why? - because the "controller " won't want to stop. And the "controller" is in control!

Take me at my word - what I am going through I would not wish on anyone at this site. Even my friend doesn't know all of what I'm going through because it will make it seem hopeless and my friend has given more than I could expect. You see - you won't feel it until years later - and it will be so ingrained in how you relate that it becomes impossible to stop. My wife is so used to it that even now that I've made such an issue - she continues and kids herself into thinking she merely "suggesting" things that she feels is for my own good.

So Silvermoon - don't fear her reaction if you confront her with the behavior. Fear yourself for allowing it to happen. Had I done that anywhere in the first dozen years of my marriage I would not be so scared today of what lies ahead.

thanks for the replies all, and in response to congruous i'm not mad at anyone :? , in fact i'm very thankful for all advice and comments made, as there is of course no obligation to do so. i would wish for nothing less than strong words of support, and i am glad that this board gathers together special individuals who have the sensitivity and wisdom to provide it.

i am aware of the effect that control from one person can have on the other. some of the earliest advice i received on this very board was to slow the pace of our relationship, that i was pushing her too hard and too fast, to concede slightly for her, and for myself. it made her uncomfortable at the time, and i saw what needed to be done. i'm afraid i can't detail all the times power has changed hands in our relationship, how and why, and when we achieved a balance. but for the friend who turns up uninvited, we have achieved a very strong point in our relationship. for all the negative tone, think of all the dark secrets that have been revealed in the recent past and their intentions. as unsettling as they may sound, these are the words of a person asking for forgiveness so that we may move on. and lest it be forgotten, the events she described do not even require forgiveness or a second look because by definition they belong in a past before me and so cannot relate. she wouldnt bring it up if she didnt believe our relationship was strong enough to handle it. with regards to control, i failed to mention about the manner in which i question her regarding our future; sometimes gently, sometimes aggressively. more than any other topic is the one regarding our future after uni. i have pushed her just as hard and consistently on this as she has on anything else. i don't talk about the things i contribute, only of hers. and perhaps i will always understate myself, because it is within my nature to concede the limelight to others. my words here are a perception of reality, but aren't an objective truth. i'm not the person i have portrayed, but neither is she. i'm sadly not the writer i hoped i was. perhaps the best way for me to document my life is to take on board all the advice and observe the results. i think i've failed in my task to document clearly my experiences. i'm more a sensationalist michael bay than a subtle sofia coppola.

Like 52, I have stopped from jumping in on this for the same reasons. You are getting good advice from others, and I don't want you to feel ganged up on.

The control issue that the others have talked about is an important one, but the feeling I have gotten for some time reading your posts is that the underlying issue is jealousy, which of course can be fed from many things including insecurity.

Jealousy is an ugly emotion that many people, especially younger people I think, equate to love. It is not. Jealousy has no place in a loving relationship. Feeling jealousy, or what I get more from your Charlotte, the need to have your partner display jealous feelings are destructive.

(If I have shared this with you before, excuse my senility, and chalk it up to my advanced age).

There was a point very early in my relationship with my husband, which this came into full perspective for me. We were in a pool hall, like I said early in our relationship, so there was no ring, but we were a couple. He went up to the bartender to get us a couple of brews, and the gentleman inquired whether I was “with” him. My then boyfriend said yes, and this man proceeded to tell him that he would take me away from him. My then boyfriend said, well give it a try, but I doubt if it will work.

At first I didn’t know how to react to this as my husband relayed it to me. The total lack of a jealous reaction was foreign to me, other relationships I had been in had been full of jealousy, and controlling behavior, on the men’s part mostly. Once I wrapped my brain around it I realized that it wasn’t that he didn’t care about me, but that he trusted me, and our love for each other. Also, that he knew that if my affections could be so easily won away to another, they were not worth having.

I am not saying that it is not normal to feel jealous, but I think that once your relationship advances to the point that there is no place for jealousy in it, that is when you will truly know that you have found the woman you are meant to be with. If it doesn’t go beyond that, you could find yourself, 2, 10, 20, 30 years down the road with a relationship that you are miserable in. Remember you are in the “honeymoon” phase of your relationship. Everything is seen thru the rose colored glasses of new love. Eventually those glasses WILL come off; there is no avoiding it. The cute little quirky things, the differences that attract you now, will often become irritations and annoyances in the future, if you try and force this to be “the one”.

Excellent post, Ith.

Jealousy - sometimes born out of insecurity, sometimes out of vanity, always ultimately destructive.

And the same people who may become jealous of others also want that emotion expressed regarding them. Again - possibly due to insecurity or vanity.

I could express the bad side of that from my own experience - but I love Ith's example from the positive side too much to take attention from it. That's the way a solid relationship should be. I hope you experience that Silvermoon - with your current girlfriend or somewhere else down the line.

That's a great point, Ith. It's fun to watch an old movie and see the guys duke it out over a woman, but a man can't make a woman love him. She makes that decision when and if she wants to make it. Our culture gives us certain behaviors that allow a man to act in ways that show a woman he is interested in her, but in a good relationship the control being exerted by one party or the other has to be restrained.

an excellent point, Ith, wonderfully made. and totally spot on. in fact, i just finished discussing this issue with her over the phone within the past hr. now, i realise there are certain things in this post that might come across as strange or troubling, but bear with me.

her jealous friend, as he will eternally be known, had to visit his new school yesterday. it is quite some distance away, and he had never been there before. so, being the only friend he has, charlotte went with him for the day. of course, i was uncomfortable with the idea, but i won't spite someone for being jealous. besides, i trust her. so when charlotte asked for my permission to help a friend, i gave my consent, and they went. she kept me up to date with proceedings all through the day, but decided that she could not make such a long trip twice in one day, and decided to stay the night with a third party who shall not be named. with this knowledge, i slept easily.

i dreamt of her last night. twice. both dreams were very vivid. i remembered one when i woke the first time, then fell asleep and did it again. both were very initimate dreams, romantic even. in the first, we were kissing intimately. in the second she became tired as we walked together, and so i carried her. she was very light and fit nicely into my arms (as she does in reality). so...that was embarassing...

anyway, i was drifting in that strange place between sleep and consciousness, when the phone rang. she was on the other end, so we talked, firstly where she was, then about the previous day. she had returned home, and was clearly very tired. caught an early train. so she told me about the previous day, how business had been taken care of, and her friend (i say that sarcastically and you'll know why) was content. she then told me the story wasn't over. she had had dinner with her friend and the third party, and then retired to that person's room together to stay the night. so, slightly uncomfortable, but to be fair, little option, so understandable. noone spiting anyone here. they had been drinking as well, but she was tired and had fallen asleep. she then said the third party had told her friend something involving me and charlotte, and he had stormed out and stayed the night at the train station. she was told that the third party had told him that we were a couple, that we had travelled a long way just to see a fireworks display together. apparently he didn't know that we were together, and just thought of us as friends who shared the same course and lots of time together (wth...ignorance is bliss i suppose). he finally declared that he would call her and decide if he still wanted to be friends with her. thats the second time now, count it. and make sure to include all the times he's been angry and turned up uninvited, not to mention his attempt to discredit me, manipulate my sympathy. what a joke.

charlotte then asked me what it might feel like if someone in love was asked to just be friends. of course, it hurts, and it does make you angry, but no so-called friend has the right to put their friendship on the line without considering the other's feelings. not to mention the frankly disgraceful action he made of disregarding all the time, effort and care she had invested in helping him by declaring that she had 'done nothing' for him. simply, when i meet her again, i will once again tell her sternly that he is no friend of hers, and be done with him. i know it's hard to understand why she would still feel this obligation to help him, it took me a long time to grasp, but however convincing the reason this disrespect is a joke and frankly so is her dedication to him. and it transpired it only came about because of his ignorance, that when he said he loved her before and she said nothing, that he didn't get the point, he ignored her choice and blundered on.

she then asked me how i would react if she asked me that question, to be just friends. i said that i would ask her to explain herself and then say no. reason? i no longer feel insecure enough that i worry about whether she loves me or not. i know she does. i would say no because it is what she wants. i know by now that she doesnt want to lose me, that she wouldnt give up these feelings just like that. it would take a titanic betrayal of trust to break that now. i don't worry when she is with friends, even those who say they love her, because i know she would not do anything against me. i trust her. i can afford to dream of intimacy and love, not of anxiety and pain. when i told her this, she laughed gently. she doesnt want to see me jealous anymore, she wants to see me secure. that's all she will see. i have nothing else to show.

finally, with regards to her friend (what a friggin joke, any suggestions for alternative terms is welcome), i'm asking her to exert her control for once. disrespect and misery like this is not a friendship. that's destructive jealousy right there. that relationship is over, and he pushed her away. he has all the time in the world to regret it

Hi Silvermoon, I know this may sound ridiculous, but is there some chance that Charlotte never told Jughead that they weren't an item anymore? The more I read into your posts, the more it sounds like she has been stringing him along the whole time. And perhaps you, as well.

I know that your immediate reaction to this will be, "preposterous!", but really think about it. Aren't Jughead's actions and reactions those of someone who truly believes they are still involved? Wouldn't you act in many of the same ways yourself, if that was the case?

Did your conversations with JH ever explicitly mention the fact that you were seeing her exclusively? With that as a starting point, then think of this from JH's perspective. All he really knows is that he and Charlotte aren't spending as much time together anymore, although they are still seeing each other.

And why else would he get upset when a 3rd party mentions the fact you two are seeing each other?
He already knew that...didn't he?

It's possible that the incident at the train station was the real breakup between them. Keep your guard up, please. I am worried that she may now go in search of a new "friend", in his absence. Stay alert.

As with the other posters, I don't mean to sound down on you or your relationship. I really would like you to find the right girl and be happy. It's just that the signs I see here are ones that I interpret, through bitter experience, to be big red warning flags.
